Signs of moths

They work where nobody looks.

Clothes moth larvae feed on the keratin in wool. They prefer dark, quiet places: under sofas and beds, along walls, in rolled or stored rugs, and on the back of the rug. By the time damage shows on the front, they have often been there a while.

  • Thin or bare patches, especially under furniture
  • Tufts that pull out easily
  • Fine, sand-like debris or small silky tubes in the pile
  • Damage on the back of the rug where the knots are exposed
  • Small moths that flutter rather than fly, near closets or rugs

What we do

Find it, clean it out,
treat it.

  1. Inspection

Front and back, edges and fringe, to find active areas and how far the damage goes.

  2. Thorough cleaning

Larvae, eggs and debris are removed from the pile and foundation. Rugs with significant activity are best cleaned at the facility.

  3. Treatment

The affected areas are treated to discourage the moths from returning.

  4. Repair advice

If the pile or foundation is damaged, we tell you what can be rewoven or stabilized, and quote it separately.

  5. Prevention

We explain how to keep it from happening again: light, airflow, regular vacuuming of the back, and how to store rugs.

No treatment can promise a rug will never be attacked again. What helps most is cleaning, treatment, and rugs that aren’t left undisturbed in the dark for long.

Questions

Moths,
plainly answered.

Can moth damage be repaired?

Often, depending on how much pile and foundation has been lost. Small areas can sometimes be rewoven or stabilized; large losses may only be stabilized. We assess first and quote any repair separately.

Will cleaning alone get rid of moths?

A thorough cleaning removes larvae, eggs and debris, which is the most important step. Treatment of the affected areas and changing the conditions they like help keep them away.

Do moths attack synthetic or silk rugs?

Clothes moths feed on animal fibers, mainly wool. Silk can be attacked too, especially when mixed with wool. Synthetic rugs are generally not a food source, though larvae may damage them while feeding on soil.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the size of the rug, how much activity there is and whether repair is needed. The assessment and estimate are free.
